Prayer request
Prayers would be greatly appreciated now...My father (who was also going to be going to school again, and for the past couple months getting prepared for it) just found out that he would have to get a certain grade on the Algebra section of the Compass Test for his program, even though he would not actually use Algebra at all in what he was going to do ....(He was not even warned about this until last week, and it was just confirmed for sure today). He has never had Algebra in his life (he has been studying pre-algebra the past few weeks), and so....he really does not think he can learn it in time. In turn, he is afraid he will not be able to go to school then....which will bring a lot of problems, to put it mildly.

So, if you are able to pray, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Really? They can't just have him take an Algebra class to compensate? Maybe he can study up enough to pass the test! I wonder--is there a practice test for this so he knows what to expect?

Anyway, praying.

I don't know all of the details....I do know he can take the COMPASS test more than once, but....like I said, he hasn't ever taken Algebra in his life, yet he has about three months to learn enough to pass the test at some point (since if he does not, then he will not be able to get the state to pay for the schooling). He doesn't think he can learn it that soon.

Thank-you for your prayers.

I see.. so it's all a problem with time and opportunity!

Maybe he can learn the basics that soon, though. I think many aspects of algebra help our mind with other seemingly unrelated problems. I value all of the classes I took growing up even if they don't directly relate to my job now. Also, I thought Algebra was standard in jr. high and high school, but maybe not everywhere.

But I do understand the frustration and predicament, and I am confident that God will solve this matter in the best way. :)

That means, "Shut up, Jessica, you obviously don't know this situation or his schooling very well." Haha..

I come from 2 generations of teachers, and I think that it is RIDICULOUS that they require advanced math for people who will never use it. >_<

What's interesting is that it wasn't that way until fairly recently- my mother is a music teacher, composer and otherwise music expert, and she wasn't required to take many of the math courses because musicians don't need them... She's also a school advisor, and the one class that almost all of her students drop or flunk at least once is a required math class.

Yes, I'll be praying.

Thank-you for your prayers. I really don't understand why they would require it....(I think what really is frustrating for him is that he wasn't even told about it till last week).

It's a bit ridiculous asking for Algebra when there's no actual need for it. :/ Will be praying!

Is there someone he can talk to at the school to work this out? I'm sure that if they knew the circumstances they would try to work something out. It's ridiculous that something like this could jeopardize his education.

There are a lot of great resources online that might help him study. I try to avoid math as much as possible, so I don't really know any great links to give you, but there is an SAT prep site that I'd recommend. www.number2.com I used it (and enjoyed it), and if he's never been to college before the most they can expect is a high school level understanding of Algebra, which I would think would be summed up in the SAT. Maybe the logic's wrong there, but it's a great site and I think would help to at least review what he's learning.
