That quote is the type of Chesterton writing that is a bit hard for me to grasp, I think I'd need to see it in it's entire context, assuming there is more, to get the best understanding of it. Needless to say, he definitely is a superior writer. :)
Actually, that particular quote was a C.S. Lewis quote, from The Screwtape Letters (which I highly suggest reading!)
